Abstract

The varicella zoster virus causes both varicella and herpes zoster. Varicella, commonly called chicken pox, is the primary infection and usually results in a symptomatic vesicular diffuse rash. Herpes zoster is the reactivation of latent varicella and its incidence is greater in individuals older than 50 years of age and in immunosuppressed patients. Herpes zoster tends to present in adulthood as cellular immunity declines and in general it is rare in persons younger than 10 years. We report a case of an 8-year-old patient who developed herpes zoster without an apparent history of varicella.
