Los alquitranes, productos derivados de la destilación seca o destructiva de sustancias orgánicas, han venido siendo utilizados en dermatología desde hace más de 2.000 años1. Se les atribuyen propiedades fotosensibilizantes, anti-inflamatorias, antipruriginosas, antibacterianas y queratoplásticas2. En este trabajo se revisarán sus orígenes, efectos biológicos, terapéuticos, posible mecanismo de acción, efectos colaterales, carcinogenicidad y sus indicaciones.
