Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium leprae complex. It is transmitted by close and prolonged contact between a susceptible individual and the nasal or oral secretions of an infected subject. The infection can affect multiple organs, being the skin and peripheral nervous system involvement the most frequent and presents a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. Although its prevalence has decreased in recent decades with the advent of multidrug therapy, the disease burden remains considerable in tropical and developing countries, where a significant number of cases continue to be reported each year. Since detection in most cases depends on the dermatologist, it is essential to know the disease in depth and have a low diagnostic threshold.
