Abstract

Mucormycoses are infections with an aggressive behavior and high mortality caused by aseptate filamentous fungi that mainly affect immunocompromised individuals. The entrance gate of the fungus into the body corresponds to the different forms of clinical presentation. Early diagnostic suspicion and prompt initiation of treatment are required to improve prognosis.

We report the case of a 59-year-old woman, with no associated diseases, who after a blunt trauma presented an extensive area of necrosis located in the frontal region, with subsequent dissemination due to ocular and systemic involvement that resulted in fatal outcome. The diagnosis was based on clinical findings, direct examination with KOH taken by aspiration of ocular tissue and skin biopsy, in which thick hyaline hyphae with extensive suppurative necrosis were recognized. Based on this case, the most important characteristics of this disease are discussed.
