Abstract

Silicone granulomas (siliconomas) represent a chronic and natural inflammatory response of the host to restrain a foreign substance, in this case, silicone. They are related to one of the possible complications after the rupture or leak of the silicone gel from breast implants. This increasingly important problem was triggered by the Poly Implant Prothèse® (PIP) silicone gel breast implants. PIP breast implants were found to have higher break frequency compared with other breast prosthesis manufactures, affecting more than 300,000 women in 65 different countries.
We report the case of a 50 year-old woman with a history of breast augmentation with silicone gel implants brand PIP, who was admitted with breast ptosis, localized lipodystrophies and an axillary mass. Histopathological findings along with clinical information led to a diagnosis of siliconoma as result of the migration of silicone from the PIP implant and extracapsular rupture.
