Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in the Centro Dermatológico Federico Lleras Acosta.

Methods: We conducted an observational study in patients with squamous cell carcinoma. The socio-demographic aspects and sun exposure habits were studied.

Results: 166 patients were studied. The average age was 71 years, 69% were women. All patients lived on the Andes mountain rage region, 2,000 meters above sea level. Outdoor activities, especially agriculture, were frequently found in childhood (59%) but gradually decreased over time. Eighty eight per cent of the cases experienced at least one sunburn over their lifetime, and 52% of those patients had skin type II, 34% skin type III and 10% skin type IV.

Conclusions: Our study reinforces the importance of ultraviolet radiation exposure and latitude of living location, in developing skin cancer. In contrast to earlier studies in British and American literature, this study denuded a significant amount of patients with skin type III and IV afflicted with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, as well as, the impact of living at high altitudes above sea level. These data are the basis for further studies of risks for squamous cell carcinoma and to implement effective measures to decrease sun exposure in these people.
