Los superantígenos (SAg) fueron bautizados así por White y colaboradores en 1989, para referirse a un grupo de proteínas producidas por bacilos y virus.1 Estos SAg son reconocidos por su capacidad de estimular la división de linfocitos T y aumentar la secreción de citoquinas, y con ellas participar de manera muy directa en la etiopatogenia de varias enfermedades de la piel, como el síndrome de shock tóxico, la toxicoinfección alimentaria, la escarlatina, el eritema perineal recurrente, la endocarditis, el síndrome eritemato-descamativo rebelde del VIH, la fiebre reumática, la psoriasis en gotas, la enferme dad de Kawasaki, la dermatitis atópica, el linfoma cutáneo de células T y el síndrome de Reiter.
