El síndrome carcinoide es una rara enfermedad sistémica con manifestaciones cutáneas. Existe una frecuencia reportada en la literatura mundial de 5 casos anuales en los últimos 5 años, siendo el presente el primero de 1991. Es también el tercer caso reportado en el que se hace tratamiento con ciproheptadina.
La paciente, mujer de 67 años de edad, presentaba oleadas de enrojecimiento y calor de tipo III, diarrea, broncoconstricción, lesiones cardiovasculares y metástasis hepáticas. La localización del tumor primario fue desconocida. El diagnóstico se confirmó mediante la determinación del ácido 5 hidróxi indol acético. En alicuotas de orina de 24 horas, las concentraciones fueron de 61.1 mg (con valores normales entre 0-7 mg en 24 horas). La terapia con ciproheptadina, 12 mg/día, eliminó la diarrea en los últimos 12 meses.
