Dermatologic manifestations in HIV-positive patients. Follow up of 349 patients.

BACKGROUND: HIV-positive patients have frequent and varied dermatological manifestations which trend to be severe and atypical in presentation, making diagnosis and treatment so difficult.
OBJECTIVES: Describe dermatological manifestations from a group of HIV-positive patients that attend an ambulatory HIV/AIDS consult service in Medellín.
METHODS: This is a descriptive, cohort, prospective, study with porcentual analysis, which collected information (previous informed consent) about clinical features of different dermatological manifestations from a group of HIV-positive patients that attend an ambulatory HIV/AIDS consult service in Medellín during a 4 year period.
RESULTS: We included 349 HIV-positive patients, in which male sex predominate and the average age was 38 years-old, 70% of patients were on HAART and the average CD4 count was 274/mL. 863 dermatological problems were diagnosed: 256 viral infections mainly HPV, 255 fungal infections (candidiasis and tinea), 35 bacterial infections mainly syphilis and 26 parasitic infections by S.scabiei; additionally we found some other non-infectious dermatological entities like seborrheic dermatitis, xerosis, melasma and toxicodermic reactions.
CONCLUSIONS: The dermatological manifestations of different entities that affect HIV-positive patients are highly prevalent, being their presentation and severity diverse.
