A Triple therapy for the treatment of keloid scars: a case series

Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of treatment of keloid scars with simultaneous triple therapy (resection, cryotherapy and infiltration with intralesional triamcinolone acetonide) in a group of patients treated at a third level institution in Cali, Colombia.

Methods: A descriptive, observational, retrospective study was carried out, including patients diagnosed with keloid scars who received treatment with simultaneous triple therapy during the period from 2017 to 2019, patients who did not attend follow-up were excluded.

Results: 27 patients (17 women) were studied, the average age was 30.8 (standard deviation of 11.7) years, the median appearance of the keloid scar was 18 years, phototype V was the most affected (33.3%), the The auricle was the main location (88.9%), with trauma being the most relevant cause of the scar, 33.3% (9 patients) received previous treatment with intralesional corticosteroid infiltration. 63% presented only one lesion. It should be noted that one lesion per patient was followed up for 6 months, of which 66.7% (18) did not recur after management. Pain was found to be the most relevant adverse effect.

Conclusions: Simultaneous triple therapy for CQ management in our study showed a response without recurrence in 66.7% of cases with minimal complications. This represents the first study in Colombia in patients with CQ.
