Abstract

Background: Melasma is a very common and prevalent pigmentary disorder in women of high phototypes. It corresponds to a chronic and recurrent disease that considerably affects the quality of life of those who suffer it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical features related to quality of life of patients diagnosed with melasma.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study, 50 patients of both genders with a melasma evaluated between april and may 2023. Sociodemographic and clinical features were analyzed, and the following scales were applied: Modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI), Dermatology Quality of Life Index (DLQI) and the Melasma Quality of Life Scale adapted and validated to Spanish (Sp-MelasQoL).

Results: The mean age was 42.28 years, 92% were women and 8% men. The mean of the total Sp-MelasQoL score was 39.46. Of these 84% of patients were bothered by the appearance of melasma, 66% felt frustrated, 60% embarrassed, 50% felt less attractive and 46% depressed. Additionally, there was statistical association between quality of life compromise and the variables mMASI, time of evolution and facial distribution of melasma.

Conclusions: A significant association was identified between melasma severity, duration and important emotional affectation in the patients evaluated. As dermatologists, this type of study highlights the importance of considering the emotional impact of this type of pathologies on our daily clinical practice.
