Correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnoses in patients with skin lesions
Keywords:
clinic-pathological correlation, dermatology diagnosis, histopathological diagnosisAbstract
Background: The histopathological examination is an important diagnostic tool in dermatology. However, there are only a few studies evaluating the correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnoses; this is the reason why this research project was conducted.
Objectives: To evaluate the correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnoses and to determine whether improvement is achieved when dermatologists contribute with two or more diagnoses. Patología de la Congregación Mariana were evaluated during the year 2008. Proportional correlation at a confidence interval of 95% (CI95%) was obtained by groups of diagnoses and according to the number of clinical diagnoses.
Results: The proportional correlation between clinical diagnoses and histopathology diagnoses was 63% (CI95%, 59.9 - 66.0) (kappa index=0.55). There was no difference noted in the proportional correlation between groups of histological diagnosis, or according to the number of clinical diagnoses.
Conclusion: The strength of the correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnoses in dermatology was moderate. A greater proportional correlation on larger number of clinical diagnoses was not found.
