Abstract

Introduction: Adult female acne (AMA) is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous follicle that occurs after the age of 25, its prevalence has increased in recent years and it has been associated with endocrine diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim is to determine the prevalence of clinical and biochemical polycystic ovary syndrome in Colombian women with acne in adulthood treated in the dermatology and endocrinology service.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study. We included women seen in the dermatology and endocrinology clinic at 2 private clinics in Bucaramanga, Santander during 2021. Demographic, clinical, laboratory and diagnostic data were collected through electronic medical records and those who attended outpatient clinic.

Results: 169 women with acne were included with a mean age of 32.14 ± 5.62 years. 44.97% of the women presented acne for the first time after the age of 25, 34.91% persisted since adolescence and the remaining 20.11% reappeared. 86.39% presented inflammatory acne, preferably on the face, followed by the back and anterior chest. Acne severity was mild in 53.90%. The prevalence of PCOS was 62.13%, where phenotype A predominated.

Conclusions: Acne in adult women is a marker of hyperandrogenism, PCOS being the most frequent cause (6 out of 10). Therefore, the systematic study of PCOS in adult women who consult for acne is suggested.
